Subject: Public Call for Nominations for Membership of Gene Technology
Advisory
PUBLIC CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
Membership of Gene Technology Advisory Committees
The Office of the Gene Technology Regulator is inviting organisations
to
put forward nominations for relevant positions on the Gene
Technology
Technical Advisory Committee, Gene Technology Ethics Committee and the
Gene
Technology Community Consultative Committee. Appointments to
these
committees will be for terms of up to three years.
The Gene Technology Act 2000 (the Act) represents the
Australian
Government's component of a national regulatory scheme to identify
and
manage risks to the environment and risks to human health posed by, or
as a
result of, gene technology.
The regulatory scheme covers dealings with genetically modified
organisms
(GMOs) including contained research involving GMOs, field trials, and
the
intentional release of GMOs into the Australian environment.
The Act also established three advisory committees:
. The Gene Technology Technical Advisory Committee which provides
scientific and technical advice to the Regulator and the Ministerial
Council;
. The Gene Technology Ethics Committee which provides advice on
ethical
issues relating to gene technology to the Regulator and the
Ministerial Council; and
. The Gene Technology Community Consultative Committee which
provides
advice on matters of general concern to the community, in
relation
to GMOs, to the Regulator and the Ministerial Council.
Nominees should be people of broad experience and standing, have a
high
level of expertise and should be able to consistently attend meetings
and
undertake other duties related to the Committee's work program as
required.
Committee members will be selected as individuals, in accordance with
the
Act - they will not be a representative of the organisation who
nominates
them.
Nominations must be submitted to the Office of the Gene
Technology
Regulator (OGTR) by:
7 May 2004
The nomination package is available on the OGTR web site at
www.ogtr.gov.au
or by telephoning
1800 181 030.
