Dear All,
By now some of you will have had your interviews with members of the
Employee Capabilities and Engagement section of Human Resources. Those
who received their PES discussion template in the first week will have
noticed some very strange questions. Many of these have been fixed in
the second version, but there are still questions in Section 2 that I
recommend you NOT answer, namely 2.12 and 2.13. These questions are at
best ambiguous, with it not being clear if 'activity level' refers to
allocated workload or how you spend your time, and at worst could be
used to your detriment.
Even with the improvements to the questionnaire, I have problems with
the following questions.
1.2 Staff would have no way of deciding on 'Storage', and
would have difficulty commenting on the other listed aspects unless they
were actively involved in these.
1.5 There is no option for showing commitments to honours
and postgraduate students.
2.8 There are many important committees missing from this
list, including the Academic Consultative Group and the Animal and Human
Ethics Committees.
3.4 This question has been improved but is still difficult
to answer. A 3-point scale (Unimportant, Neutral, Important) would make
it easier to complete, and this is the approach that I have taken.
There is also no facility for including significant administrative
roles, which the University thinks it can simply shift to support staff.
You might address the possible problems associated with this approach
during your interviews.
And finally, remember that this is just a snapshot of your current
activities, which could give a very misleading picture of your actual
work at the University.
