This may interest the Australian academic community (or at least those that
don't want to be fingerprinted or have to give lengthy notice of intention
to pass through an American airport or -- like a Murdoch University
academic -- to be locked up in transit at LA and sent back to Australia
without reaching Canada because of inadvertently failing to tick all the
Americans' boxes).

First Australia-Canada non-stop flights

Air Canada will launch the first ever non-stop services between Australia
and Canada in December.

The airline will introduce non-stop flights between Sydney and Vancouver on
December 16 using 282-seat Airbus A340-300 aircraft.

Southbound flights will require a brief stopover in Honolulu for refuelling
but customers will be permitted to stay on board, thereby eliminating US
customs clearance and transit visas.

Northbound, the flight time will be 14 hours and 40 minutes, which is two
hours and 15 minutes less than for the one-stop service and almost five
hours faster than other carriers' alternative routings.
